Comic Barrymore risks losing half his assets to Kiwi ex

By CATH BENNETT - Sunday News | Sunday, 22 April 2007

SPLIT: Michael Barrymore may have to give half of his fortune to former Kiwi lover Sean Davis

Funnyman Michael Barrymore may not be laughing when he gets the bill from his split with Kiwi lover Shaun Davis.

Last week Sunday News revealed the couple had ended their long-term relationship after Davis became frustrated with Barrymore's thirst for a return to stardom.

And now, The UK celebrity - who tried to resurrect his career by appearing on the British version of Big Brother - may be forced to give half his assets to his former boyfriend.

Barrymore has been a resident in New Zealand since March 2004 after he left the UK following a drugs death scandal at his mansion.

His three-year stint in New Zealand, living with Davis, means the pair were legally in a de facto relationship under the Property Amendment Act.

The Act, passed in 2001, is among the strictest relationship property legislations in the world -allowing for equal division.

If Barrymore didn't secure a prenuptial agreement with Davis before moving to New Zealand, he risks losing half of everything he owns.

"It does appear there is a real possibility Mr Barrymore will face a claim under the Act and this could prove costly for him," a legal source told Sunday News.

Barrymore, 54, and Davis, 31, had been together for almost a decade and unofficially tied the knot in a secret gay Hawaiian wedding in 1999.

After living in England for much of their relationship, the couple split in 2001, when Davis, a stockbroker, returned to New Zealand just days before a man's body was found floating in Barrymore's Essex mansion.

The couple reunited a year later and decided to forge a new life in New Zealand.

Barrymore's finances have already hit the headlines after he was clobbered with a massive $4.2m tax bill - causing him to declare bankruptcy in England.

The bankruptcy meant Barrymore was forced to hand over his $3m Essex pad to liquidators.

In New Zealand, the couple have attempted to rebuild their former life of luxury, living in a series of plush Auckland properties.

Barrymore is believed to have received $380,000 for his 23 days in the UK Celebrity Big Brother House last year.

He is also rumoured to have scooped $3m for his biography Awight Now: Setting the Record Straight and an undisclosed fee for appearing in a UK stage production of Scrooge.
