Was this a massive error of judgment tonight or what?
Kieran etc out and Showbiz back in?! I mean seriously?! The main pleasure of watching BB is that you get to dig in deep and watch how a group of very different people evolves over a nice long period of time. It's a real story that burns slowly in real time. It's the ultimate show for people watching. And there is no greater subject than people. All the fireworks and drama and 'crash bang wallop' of BB are all well and good, but they are all short term hits. The real long term pleasure of BB is watching the relationships evolve and the journey of the individuals. You get to know them by spending a decent amount of time with them. After last year's moody BB, this year's house was much happier; it was all set to be a classic old school house. A summer of watching this particular bunch of HMs was something i was looking forward to as they seemed to work well together in a way i haven't seen in BB for years without it being boring. But tonight, in the name of 'fun' - the 'massive twist' robbed this year's house of it's flow, lost some major characters who had loads of depth and maturity and spirit. Lost some HMs that were very human and real and it would have been great to watch how this year's group all played out. Aaron, Kieran, Sarah and Harriet were all natural, strong characters and exactly what BB is about. Getting rid of them all so early like that is a completely massive and gutting loss to this year's series. I know it's early days but the replacements seem like a disaster. It feels to me like there was some oak tree growing nicely outside the window but then some bright spark thought it was boring, so they ripped it down and replaced it with a giant shiny metal pole with cheap flashing lights all over it. I think BB producers have lost sight of the natural human pace and slow-burn pleasure of BB and in the panic of pursuing ratings, they are sacrificing the story of the series for the sake of short-term shock tactics. It's superficial and to be honest quite deflating and dissapointing. And it stinks of desperation. I expect there are lots of long term BB fans who are feeling cheated tonight. |
