I think a large factor of it was right wing parties and media praying on the public's fears and insecurities as well as using one of the most important political votes in British history as an opportunity to throw jabs and shade at each other. Immigration was one of the main selling points to this - leaving the EU isn't going to change that. The fact that since the vote, people from other countries, people of colour have been abused, assaulted, attacked more so than usual is telling in itself.
Leaving the EU has nothing to do with what people thought they were voting for. It was a knee jerk reaction and the vote was based on the wrong information.
