The Farm

Five is taking another stab at having a successful reality series by importing a popular Swedish format.
Having longed for a 'breakout' reality show for some time now, the broadcaster made a first attempt earlier this year with Back to Reality from Princess Productions. The two-week series, which locked a number of former reality contestants in a house together, failed to set the ratings alight; a gamble which cost the network 35 million.
Now Five has turned to Endemol - the company behind Big Brother, The Salon and Fame Academy - and charged it with finding a new show to pull in the viewers.
According to Broadcast this week, Endemol will be adapting a successful Swedish format for the purpose. Called The Farm, the series will abandon 12 celebrities in rural surroundings where they will live without running water, electricity, modern toilet facilities or mobile phones for a month. Living in isolation, they must grow their own food, collect firewood and tend farmyard animals.
The series first aired in Norway in 2001 and has since been adapated for nine other countries including Italy, Sweden and France. Earlier this year the second season finale on TV2 Norway became the most-watched entertainment programme in the channel's history with a 61% audience share.
Five will strip the show over a month later this autumn.
