Exactly. They've always been a tad pretentious in not white achieving what it is they're setting out to do.
And getting lost in those attempts is the ability to tell even basic interesting horror stories and it ruins the show. If they'd stop trying to be clever or topical or boundary pushing which they can't do the show would improve tenfold. They need yo focus on story and character before anything else.

Yeah, I think that's why Roanoke was so good, it left out most of the clumsy allegory in favour of a good story and good characters. Aside from the framing device of the various TV shows, it was a very back to basics ghost story and it just worked.
