A congressman, Will Hurd, representing the largest district across the border (800 miles) has rubbished a lot of the claims about the wall and he's a republican no less. He endorses a 'smart wall' which basically translates into more equipment to monitor what they've already got as currently, response times are too long to do anything about it but would be quicker with better equipment in place. It's a cheaper option that will actually help the situation rather than just help Trump's ego.

Your contacts seem very much like they've given into Trump's imaginary crisis. The stats do not lie, there is no crisis, there's no need for a wall, just modernise what they've already got.
