The guy was fixing up a LOT of very rich and influential people, for decades, and was on the verge of spilling names so now he's dead. It's that simple. But it'll likely be impossible for anyone to figure out exactly who made the call.

The issue is that no-one has any trust in the people who are in power, or those that fund those people. America has had this facade of virtue for decades, and it just isn't working any more. That's what has driven all the various conspiracy theories.

The UK is in pretty much the same position. All trust has gone.

In America there's been an undercurrent of insane wealth behind all sorts of things, running through the rise of the modern United States. Its sort of an open secret that no one really talks about. Part of the reason Trump won was the protest vote against that but Trump has been mixed up in exactly the same circles for decades.
