The Beatles are placed higher in the heirarchy of great music because they were unique for their time/trailblazers, IMO. When compared to a lot of the music that followed them over the next few decades - even music that was inspired by them - ... ... ... they don't measure up. They definitely started something, musically, but they were improved on
