3 European cups in 5 years (only british manager to do so), all started 4 years after he took over. I get that he was in a privileged position, but didn't ron atkinson finish 2nd the season before fergie took over?

Manchester United had lost their greatness by the time Fergie took over. Liverpool were the clear number one club by that time. Everton had a little spell in the mid-eighties. But Manchester United hadn't won the league since 1967 before Fergie took over. Teams like Leeds, Derby and Nottingham Forest had took over Manchester United by then.

They won the odd FA cup, but they were still living on past reputation from the Busby era.
