Immigration isn't an issue when the population feel that year-on-year, their lives are improving. The world's economies have stagnated for 20+ years now, so the people look for things to blame, and covid made that feeling much worse. So now governments and immigrants are the target. It's not really surprising as borders have been unchecked for decades and people can see the changes that have happened around them

I think it is less it is the highest of personal or political priorities but that many feel both gaslit and largely ignored on the need for reform.

The political seas have shifted. Compared to when I first became an adult (early 00s) people are quick to point out bad signs and give also their reasoning. Being quiet didn't work so more and more people have become more outspoken and often give reasons. It can seem reactive, but it's a good thing I think.

There is a long history of the politician ignoring the public on specific issues. Immigration is one such issue.

Tackling immigration has always been waved around like bait for campaigns but conveniently ignored once elections are won. It was a core topic in Obama's 1st campaign, in particular, and he ran a fairly moderate campaign imo. So the desire to reform that system is well known across the divide so I don't see it being just an issue that certain segments fixate on, but rather, it has just become glaringly obvious that it's one politicians most avoid.

This is a decades long ongoing issue whereas many current issues or focal points are newer... so There is more information on this topic as it has a longer amount of time to deliver an impact.
You make some fair points.

I just wish that things like the Digital ID's and the trying to heavily police and stalk people on the Internet were the bigger talking points for people though.

Or the fact that the Police in the UK are growing a pattern of arresting people for non-crimes.

The immigration issue is more directly related to these things than you think in many ways because mass *unchecked (important) immigration inevitably leads to largess in government. Just use "public safety" to push things like digital ID and to push for major increases in policing for "enforcement" reasons. It's not that immigration is inherently bad, it's that it's out of balance with our ability to integrate them responsibly.

We would not have Trump's policies and a public desire to see motions to crack down without preexisting government largess and irresponsible leadership. The irony here is the Public continue to trust the government to resolve issues it directly caused on purpose to support its own long-term growth...

Sounds like a leader who puts his country and people before other countries and illegal immigrants ..

I think only Boris had similar ‘our country comes first’ leadership qualities since Margaret Thatcher

I do 100% agree with your last paragraph in particular.
