Up to at least the early 1980's, it was legal to administer corporal punishment in schools.
Children could be beaten at school, for not getting sufficient marks in a spelling test.
My understanding is that that was declared illegal in state schools, but persisted for a while in private schools.
I never received corporal punishment, although I was at school when it was around.
Children would be hit with a stick (The cane), or a trainer (The slipper)
The aim was to make a permanent mark or bruise.
My mother was canned for writing with her left hand.
