Default Jade Goody: \'Circus\' surrounding her death is like \'eating a picnic at a public hanging\'

Quote:
Jade Goody: 'Circus' surrounding her death is like 'eating a picnic at a public hanging'
Public fascination with the terminal illness of reality television star Jade Goody is "creepy voyeurism" that echoes the spectacle of "public hanging" according to a leading BBC journalist who has cancer.

The "public circus" surrounding the Big Brother star "is perilously close to becoming a form of entertainment", says James Landale, chief political correspondent for the BBC News Channel, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the lymph system.

Miss Goody, 27, is dying from cervical cancer that has spread to her liver, groin and bowel.

She has chosen to spend her last weeks in the limelight, selling the picture rights to her wedding to Jack Tweed, 21, to a magazine. She also plans to record a television interview with Piers Morgan for ITV.

In an article for the Daily Mail, Mr Landale, 40, said those following the coverage of Miss Goody's final weeks "with such seemingly prurient interest" should "examine their motives".

He wrote: "This is a powerful, compelling story of human tragedy – but how much are people drawn in also by the prospect of witnessing death? How much are people succumbing to exactly the same appetites as those who once took their picnics to attend a public hanging?

"Perhaps they are not quite modern-day tricoteuses sitting with their knitting before the guillotine, or day-trippers to the Coliseum watching the lions at work. Cancer rarely provides such a quick, violent death."

He also compared those following the story to motorway drivers who slow down to stare at scene of an accident.

He wrote: "I will not judge Jade herself. I cannot in all decency do so. She is facing death: I have merely glimpsed it across a crowded room. While she is counting the days, I have simply felt a brief shiver of mortality.

"Audiences down the ages have always been attracted by death. The fascination of Greek tragedy is not if death will come – we know that it will – but how and why. So let us at least be honest about such motivations.

"What we are seeing in these final stages of Jade Goody's life is little more than creepy voyeurism. Death was part of life. Now, it seems, it is perilously close to becoming a form of entertainment."

Miss Goody is due to be christened this month at a church close to her home, along with her sons.

While there are members of the public who are willing to buy the magazines and papers and watch the reality programmes. there will always be a market for these "celebs" to sell their stories. I personally don't read the magazines/tabloids, but you cannot avoid her story when she is on the news all the time (and whilst visiting a BB forum).

People want to read about things like this, otherwise there wouldn't be a market for it. If I was in that position, I would like to think I would handle my affairs more privately. At the end of the day it was Jade's decision to do this publically and if some members of the public will pay to read about her and see pictures of her in distress, then that's up to them.

Yes well... I do that, but thats human. Our species is a nosey species.

And also it irritates me that people are upset or annoyed by this... the amount of good Jade has done, I have learnt more about the disease, I didn't realise the disease happened this quickly and I have learnt a lot by it and I am going to be far more safe on it.

Only for those that want the info.
Many papers have lost sales by having her on the Front page
as "not everyone "needs her up coming death info etc.

I personally want to follow it because I feel like I know Jade... I want to know what's happening with her. Call me sick all you want, but I want to know.

I can see that as a normal thing
but they are over doing it
and Max who controls it can do better.

First of all, I cant avoid the threads. And the fact that the title pretty much describes the new agony she is going through, I dont have to even look through it to be annoyed. "Jade lips turn Blue" "Jades sons weeps", "jade to have op tonight" etc, etc.......
And yes, its Redmoon. He seemingly has made it a mission to depress people with the play by play. I would think that a mod, would know not to spam the forum with the same things over and over again, instead of keeping it all in one thread, so that people who dont enjoy watching every minute of someones dying on the forum. Imagine if cancer sufferers read all these agonising descriptions of pain. This is absolutely ridiculous..

Is there any way of avoiding it?

Hello???

this is a BIG BROTHER FORUM and guess what?? She is the first star from big brother to die! She was a star and became famous through the show.

She has a lot of fans on here and a lot of people come on here for information on Jade.

Redmoon is only posting the information that are already in the papers and the internet.

Its not because he is enjoying Jade's agony. How dare you suggest such a thing about someone that you dont know?! Who the hell do you actually think you are because you sure as hell aint big or clever for posting something like that about a great tibb member so has been here a hell of a lot longer than you.

Yes, by not visiting the Big Brother 3 forum. Nothing is happening to the rest of the BB3 housemates so there isn't really much to look for/read up on so if you don't come in here you won't see the threads. Simple.

Quickly is a relative term, Jade was warned many years before now about abnormal cells during her cervical examanination but chose to ignore those warnings, for four years infact. If Jade has done any good it's to not follow her example! The rest of her life is also a warning.

Why anyone can praise this woman is a mystery. Personally I hope she dies off-cam. And good riddance.
