I think it's fair to say we were meant to assume Cook does indeed beat the
shit out of Foster. I think you have got the wrong impression. Cook isn't nothing. That was the point of the speech and subsequent lunge. He was always perceived as nothing but by sticking up for his best mate he is becoming something. That was the idea I got from the ending, anyway.
