Don't know about you - but I know I have certainly been in situations were someone claims to know me that I can't recall - only to have it finally dawn on me months later - that I had met them before, after all!

I understand your point. However, Dave stated that he personally knows Rachel, and not that they have simply met once. Therefore, at least some parts of his tale can be confirmed as a lie, as Rachel doesn't even remember having ever spoken to him, let alone personally knowing him.
