BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON BIG BROTHER AFRICA
Sunday 22 June 2003 - Day 29 in the African Big Brother House - Day 31 in the British Big Brother House · 12 Housemates from 12 African countries, 106 days in the house · Launched Sunday 25 May 2003 · Big Brother Africa is the first cross-continental Big Brother, bringing together 12 countries from one continent · There are five female housemates and seven male housemates The female housemates are: Abergail Plaatjies (South Africa) Bruna Éstivao (Angola) Cherise Makabale (Zambia) Tapuwa Mhere (Zimbabwe) Warona Setshwaelo (Botswana) The male housemates are: Alexander Holi (Kenya) Bayo Okoh (Nigeria) Gaetano Kagwa (Uganda) Mwisho Mwampamba (Tanzania) Samuel Bampoe (Ghana) Stefan Ludik (Namibia) Zein Dudha (Malawi) · This is the first Big Brother to encompass each African continent. Prior to this, there have been two South African Big Brother series. The first two Big Brothers were screened on M-Net · Big Brother Africa is broadcast on the national broadcaster in each country, is produced by Endemol and created by M-Net · Big Brother Africa is transmitted in 42 African countries · The Big Brother Africa house is based in Randburg, South Africa · 27 cameras and 56 microphones capture every housemate’s actions. · The winning African housemate will receive US$100,000 (£59,000) · Big Brother Africa is presented by South African TV personality and DJ Mark Pilgram. Local guest presenters also join to represent each African country represented in the house · Big Brother Africa’s official website is www.bigbrotherafrica.com Big Brother Africa · The first eviction of this series will take place today (Sunday 21 June). · Evictions in Big Brother Africa take place on Sundays, with daily 30-minute edited shows screened every Monday – Saturday · Both evictions and nominations take place every Sunday night in an hour-long show. Each evictee is given his or her own eviction party and the winner celebrates with a Victory Party. · 24 hour live coverage is also available to African viewers · As with the British Big Brother, the housemates have only one hour of hot water each day. However, in Africa viewers can watch the housemates in the shower during ‘Shower Hour’ · As with the UK, BBA housemates also have to take part in tasks to determine their food budget. Previous tasks so far this series have been Sports Week, Dance Marathon, Flying Those Flags For Africa and Getting To Know Your Housemate and each week they have gambled high percentages of their food budget. So far, the African Big Brother housemates have only failed one task · Due to the different currencies in each country, BBA has its own virtual currency that the housemates can spend on their weekly food budget · The housemates put their shopping list together every Monday and they receive their food the next day · BBA provides a laundry service for bedding and towels · The language of the house is English · Rules are the same as the British Big Brother · Each housemate has brought into the house art/craft work and fabric/cloth from their country of origin The African house · The largely open-plan house consists of 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a Diary Room, store room, living room, dining area, kitchen, garden with a jacuzzi, basketball court and barbeque area · The house also includes a ‘Sin Bin’ - the punishment spot where misbehaving housemates carry out punishment chores decided by Big Brother · The design of the house is a fusion of African influences and cultures, mixing antique furniture, iconic art and textured fabrics · Two green and red winged 18-month-old macaw birds (Ara Chloroptera) live in the ‘jungle gym’ in the garden. There’s also an indoor atrium for them. The housemates have strict instructions on how to care for them |
