I don't even know what the lasso tool is. I just place one photo on to the other and use the magic wand to highlight the bits I don't want and erase them with the eraser thing.
It's easy if the backround of the photo is just all one colour. Highlight it with the magic wand, brush it out with the eraser and she's gone. If it has too many colours I often ditch the magic wand out of impatience and manually start erasing the backround around the persons head which I'm not very good at so next thing you know Nicholas Cage is missing a finger and has all sorts of odd dips in his otherwise beautiful hair.
