Is there actually a way one can just avoid doing jury duty? I mean it seems a bit curious to have to do something like that.

You can be excused jury service if you fall into certain categories:

Some types of medical treatment
Be mentally unfit
Certain types of work commitment
Important family commitments, weddings holidays funerals etc
Recently done jury service
Join up
Certain areas of police work are excused as well

You will be disqualified if you have been convicted of certain types of offences, whilst on bail and for a period of time after doing a prison sentence or other other types of punishment.
