It was never meant to 'add anything new or better', it was a near
shot for shot remake intended to bring the story to a wider, English speaking audience - yes, an audience who cannot be bothered to read the subtitles. And I personally believe this is the only/main reason for the hate. Remakes generally have a bad reputation, and liking a remake or even just admitting that it wasn't bad (I feel I only suggested the latter, despite what "stu" says I am suggesting) is not cool in itself. You can use the "why don't they just read the subtitles" argument until you're blue in the face, but the simple fact is that the
wide audience would rather see something in their own language, especially the Americans.
And I actually do not like this assumption that foreign = good. Of course there are loads of amazing foreign films, but I hardly think REC can be considered one of them. Just my two cents.
