Default Problem with VCR

It seems when I have been trying to record a programme on my 2 year old VCR it is not erasing the previous sound track.

At first I thought it was a duff video cassette, but after another programme lost, I did some tests with other old tapes recording blank on the Auxillery channel (Where you would attach a camcorder). The previous image was not erased totally and the sound was still not erased.

Someone suggested I use a tape head cleaner. My brother in law said it sounded like the VCR had worn out, especially if I used it a lot. I usually set it to record the cult TV stuff on BBC2, and of course I used it to record the BB programmes.

The previous one lasted at least about 3 years

From the symptoms described, do I need to replace it.

The cheapest one is from Argos at £44.99

Just a long shot but have you tried adjusting the tracking control on playback.

With the ultra low prices of VHS today it probably won't be worth while having it serviced.

Better still. Break into the money box and get a DVD recorder. You won't want to look back at VHS again......

With my finances £200 is way beyond possibility, plus what do I do with my video archive ?

I managed to find a VHS at Dixons for £44.99, a Grundig but the remote control and the way you set programmes and the clock is identical to the old one a JMB. Are they from the same company ?

JMB rebadge other manufacturers' models so it is possible that they are the same.

When you do eventually go the DVD route then simply copy to DVD discs. Over the past 18 month I have copied loads. The discs are quite cheap now providing you don't by retail that is!!.There is no quality loss to worry about and the pictures are super stable unlike VHS.
