To be fair pretty much the only people supporting him on Facebook were women from Londonderry (with the odd bloke thrown in)... They were all harping on about "supporting their own". It seems they only voted to save him because he was from their town, not based on what sort of a person he is

This is true. They spam Facebook constantly with their support of Conor, because Derry people stick together apparently.
