Detectives probing alleged sex offences carried out by Jimmy Savile’s former driver were last night looking into 17 separate complaints from women.

Ray Teret, 71, was arrested at his home in Greater Manchester last week over the alleged rape of three children in the 1960s & 70s.

Since news of his arrest broke, cops at the Serious Sexual Offences Unit have been contacted by 14 more women who say they were subjected to a catalogue of crimes at the hands of Teret including indecent assault, the sexual abuse of children, indecent exposure and false imprisonment.

Police in Manchester have distanced their investigation into Teret from the nationwide inquiry into predatory paedophile Savile being conducted by officers at Met.

The original complaints against Teret, a former pirate DJ known as Savile’s sidekick throughout the sick star’s TV heyday, were made to the Met who passed them north when there was no suggestion the Jim’ll Fix It presenter was involved.

The woman came forward after news of Savile’s long-term abuse came to light.

They said Teret raped them while they were under 16 while he worked in Manchester.

Police said the new complaints against Teret date from 1962 to 1979 and allegations centred on the Sale and Altrincham areas.

The alleged victims are now set to give statements to specially trained officers and are being offered support.

Teret and his housemate, Alan Ledger, 61, were held at their home in Altrincham last Thursday.

Ledger is suspected of raping one of the girls with Teret.

The pair were questioned before being bailed pending further inquiries.

Detective Inspector Simon Davies, leading the investigation for Greater Manchester Police, said: “Police investigating allegations of historic sexual abuse in the Trafford area are now looking into 17 separate complaints.

“The arrests followed an investigation by the Serious Sexual Offences Unit into three separate allegations of historic sexual abuse which have been reported to Greater Manchester Police.

“Since the arrests, a further 14 potential victims of historic sexual abuse have been identified, making a total of 17, and these complaints are also now being investigated by the Serious Sexual Offences Unit.

“Officers are continuing to provide specialist support and welfare to all the victims.

“As we said at the outset of this investigation, our duty is to all those victims who have shown great courage to come forward and report they have been victims of historic sexual abuse.

“Because of the number of victims who have come forward since last week, our investigation is now both wide-ranging and complex and clearly we need to investigate every complaint thoroughly which will take time.

“The two men who were arrested have been released on bail while we carry out these inquiries.

“Again, I want to be absolutely clear that while the publicity surrounding the late Jimmy Savile and the investigation launched by the Metropolitan Police Service into his abuse was the genesis for this inquiry and victims coming forward, we are not investigating any complaints that Savile himself was either present or involved in any of the allegations.”

Dame Janet Smith, who is conducting an inquiry into allegations of sexual abuse by Jimmy Savile, has launched an appeal for witnesses.

A website has been set up giving contact details and listing groups which provide support for victims.

The Dame Janet Smith Review was set up last month by the BBC to conduct an independent review of the corporation's practices during the Savile era.

Dame Janet's review is designed to "examine whether the BBC's culture and practices during those years enabled the sexual abuse of children to continue unchecked".

Part of her role is to obtain evidence from people who allege inappropriate sexual conduct on the part of Savile and investigate "whether BBC personnel knew or ought to have known of Savile's conduct".

The Dame Janet Smith Review website says it would like to hear from those who were the subject of inappropriate sexual conduct by the presenter on BBC premises or on location, and from those who were aware of or suspected such conduct.

It also seeks information from anyone who complained or raised concerns about Savile within the BBC, and from people familiar with its culture and practices, including those who held senior positions.

Dame Janet, a former appeal court judge, will also consider whether the BBC child protection and whistle-blowing policies are fit for purpose.

She previously led the Shipman Inquiry, which examined the activities of serial killer GP Dr Harold Shipman.

A man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences as part of the police investigation into abuse claims made against Jimmy Savile.

About 450 potential victims of sexual abuse have now been identified by the police investigation set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Late last month, police said they had identified about 300 potential victims of Savile and other abusers.

BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said: "The police said a couple of weeks ago that Savile was a predatory sex offender - one of the worst sex offenders that they had come across.

"The figures that we are being given today suggest that the scale of his offending is even worse than was first feared."

I totally agree with your comments, this whole Jimmy Savile story is now starting to make me feel very uncomfortable. It truly is descending into a Witch hunt, because JS was a dirty old man who may have overstepped the mark (remember Nothing has been proven) the establishment feels noticeably embarrassed and are now looking for "live" scapegoats. The whole thing is becoming difficult to take seriously when we are fed reports that over 450 people where sexually abused raped,molested by this fiend...!!!!

Really...!!! slight over-exaggeration maybe ?? lets try and keep this story in perspective because if it continues to be overcooked like this then we may miss the real victims of JS actions the few he actually seriously abused.

As for looking for other friends of JS who knew him back then and putting two and two together to get five by creating allegations that they must have all been involved is simply outrageous slander.

I think I've heard that particular sarcastic viewpoint several times before - it seems to me that it lacks credibility when the only posters using the words "guilty", "innocent" and "not guilty" along with the emotive descriptions "lynch-mobs" and "witch-hunts" are those apparently pleading in support of alleged sex-offenders while ignoring the cries of the truly innocent, the hundreds of violated children .....
