Thumbs down Sky Poll:Drunk A&E Patients Should Be Charged??

http://news.sky.com/story/1138596/sk...uld-be-charged

Patients who turn up at A&E for treatment while intoxicated on drink or drugs should foot the bill, according to a Sky News poll...

I think not only drunks and drugies but also all the foreigners should foot the bill too....you know the ones wasting time & money...trust me......I emigrated to Spain....and had to pay all my medical bills and so did most the spanish and believe me....you didnt have all this nonsense...

Free = idiots, time wasters....(obvs free treatment)

Not free = Sensible (think twice before going to A&E)

Welll thats my opinion...and I'm not racist as I also grew up in another foreign country, I just think we need to take note from the Spanish and other countries that do the same

USA do it.....and they are getting on with it!! can't you see how people are abusing the system?

even when on the doll.........you have to work at least 12 months before your entitled to any doll money....and thats how it should be everywere!

My 22 year old cousin gave up work because his social life was more intresting...So he was living with his parents.......and once he gave up work.....he now gets doll money.....they have just gave him a 1 bedroom flat....and money to do the flat up!

And you know what his attatude is now? why should I work when i can get everything I want If I dont work.... DISGUSTING! thats what I think......you give these people a Hand and they take your arm and leg with it!

Thats why things shouldnt be free!

Because people abuse the situation!

I disagree with it. The main reason is, its not illegal to get drunk. You can go out and get pissed, be having a good night and be glassed by some arsehole for no reason. Then you would have to foot the bill, simply because you were drinking at the time you were attacked? Bollocks.

Our healthcare system isn't 'free' anyway. We pay for it through NI.

I agree with you, this is a road I personally don't want to see the NHS going down.
I am firmly against this idea.

Who gets to decide who is a timewaster though?

What would your definition of timewaster be?

But 'drunks etc' DO need A&E. Same as everyone does at some point

I am totally against charging people tbh. Its the start of privatization..which is exactly what its intended to be. If we need to be charged for a service we already pay for..then we shouldnt be MADE to pay for it in the first place.

How would you feel, if you went out for a drink, and got attacked, and ended up being charged for the treatment that you needed..despite paying NI to already cover this?

Great, Lets just have people dying on our streets then, because they can't afford to go to A+E if they have an accident and happen to have been drinking. Sounds fantastic yes?

Who cares that they have already paid. Who cares that (if being drunk) they have also paid a ****load of tax on the alcohol they consumed too.

Arista that makes no sense whatsoever. If anything, working in a pub would make me LESS sympathetic towards drunks...

(Also I havent worked in a pub for about 3 years)

Still doesn't matter one bit where I have worked, or do work now.

Again, how would you feel if you had been out for a quiet drink with a couple of friends, ended up getting attacked, then were charged for treatment that you needed through no fault of your own..simply because you had had a drink?

Arista, I think you should read the OP and the link again tbh.

'Patients who turn up at A&E for treatment while intoxicated on drink or drugs should foot the bill,'

--

So in the scenario I said, you would be charged.

Yes it would need adjusting.

Vicky , everything is changing
for example
the Postal service is going private - that will be better.

Yeah, I have noticed. For the worst for most people, unless you are in the top 10% of earners of course

The NHS already charges for treatment following road traffic accidents, so why not charge drunks? I don't have a problem with it.

Isnt that only if there is compensation involved though? I thought it was if someone sucessfully claimed compensation from the person whos fault the accident was, the NHS could recover some of the costs for treatment at the same time.

I might be wrong, but thats how I always thought it worked :S

Sober A&E patients are charged €100 here in Ireland, that's if they haven't gone to their doctor first.
