That is quite frankly pish - I went to Glasgow last night without a care an no helicopter fell on us watching the band.

We are not the same nation for a start and none of your friends/relatives were involved. zee lives about 2 miles away. 2 miles away from disaster eh? shocking - try Kenya (?) and see if more people die than having police helicpoters crash on them

I knew it wouldn't as it'd be a one in 100 billion chance. If I go live in a warzone there is a slightly higher risk.

So you are a caring soul about Weegies all of a sudden Ben? I'm sure they appreciate your care. Weegies detest the Engerlish - why do you care of them when they couldn't give 2 fooks about you?
..yeah, I do get your point Ian, that maybe they wouldn't have cared about us, we'll never know...but I think when something so tragic happens so 'close to home' it will always have a greater impact in that it's similar to our own personal worries etc...like, if there's something extremely worrying to yourself and it absorbs you etc, but you know that in comparison to someone else's worries, it's of a 'lesser importance', like oh, there are so many people worse off than me, so that makes me feel better...but it doesn't work like that, does it..it's not that we don't have empathy/thoughts of other things in the world, it's just that it would be too 'weighty' for any human to constantly take in the world's tragedies and the awful things and things 'closer to home' are always going to effect us more/have a greater impact....

I think it makes people like Ben feel better all of a sudden. If a helicopter crashed on my next door neighbour's house sure I'd be devastated. If a heliocpter crashed on my wee friend's house in Buenos Aires sure I'd be devastated.

A disaster in Glasgow means not much more to me than one in Ben's vaunted "Kenya".

My pal from Germany put it into perspective - there was a bad road crash on the Autobahn last week and 12 died. They actually did put the Glasgow thing on their news but didn't keep a vigil on the autobahn and reported real news as well.

If a helicopter crashed on a site 2 miles from someone I knew from the internet, not so devastated - shoite happens.

To get it fed from BBC24/Sky News was lazy TV journalism.

..yeah, and the devastation would be greater because they're both friends, I understand that and it wouldn't have quite the same impact on you personally if I had that same thing happen to friends of mine, right..how could it...but it doesn't mean to say that you wouldn't feel empathy for me or my friends families/friends etc...it's just a natural and human thing that things have a greater impact, the closer they are to our own lives/the closer we personally relate to them...like sitting in a pub, having a drink with friends/enjoying a conversation etc and our loved ones expecting us home and suddenly in a few seconds that all changes..or being one of the helicopter police who, yeah even though it has some danger...our families are expecting us home that night...nothing more than just a 'routine'...and right near where one of our own forum members lives, who witnessed some of the aftermath..and other forum members who it was close to...is it not natural that it stirs our concerns/interest in a more personal way..?..that doesn't take away our empathy for other things when greater losses of lives/devastation occurs...

Ben was quite right to use the Kenya analogy. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and our close neighbour so of course we are going to hear about it in the news.

Lots of people in England (including me) have relatives in Scotland whereas the people with relatives in Kenya will be significantly fewer.

An internal affair/disaster is always going to get media precedence over an external affair. Especially one that would happen in another continent such as Africa.

That's the way it is, just like if something bad happened to someone on this forum people would be more concerned than if it happened to some other random person who wasn't on this forum.

It doesn't mean we don't care or we are are insular it's just things that are on your own doorstep have more chance of affecting you.

It doesn't work like that for me, when I get bogged down with irrational thoughts or I have some percieved catastrophe I do put it into perspective by imagining someone elses life in other countries.
My son is always joking about 'first world problems' silly things that we obsess about that in the grand scheme of things are less than trivial.

Not for one second suggesting that this is, it's a separate issue entirely. The initial grievance was it was looped on the news. yes it is of importance but we aren't aware of what else would have been deemed important yesterday now, it's unlikely nothing else happened.
I appreciate there are other channels as suggested and thats correct except the BBC is a global news channel.
I'm not attempting to downplay the tragic nature of this accident either.

I don't understand why people don't just focus on what they do to help rather than blame everyone around them. So what if the global news channel isn't focusing on the 2348u2323 other things going on in the world? this is a local disaster that has happened to people in our country...

I can't imagine the anguish of the families of the two police officers on board, they must have known that they had Helicopter duty that night and there is only ONE effing Helicopter!

I thought there would have been at least a couple in the highlands given how often climbers get lost and go missing!

They use the RAF, at least until wee fat Eck becomes president of an independent Scottish Nation!

I remember thinking that one police helicopter for the whole of Scotland sounded wrong.
