With my mum I always know what it is because she asks me what I want
 but with others I either get funny-jokey presents (a princess magazine from my housemate for my birthday, for example) or nice surprises (Bowie stuff, the odd after shave, bottle of wine). I can't remember the last really bad gift I got.
