I think there is a sense in America that a true artist has to SUFFER for their art. So pop stars think the best way to make their career more legitimate is to do crazy stuff and get addicted. They don't understand that art is a performance. Madonna understands that, which is why she's still around and sane, but most don't, most go down the MJ route or the Kurt Cobain rout.

Madonna is to Michael Jackson, as Paul McCartney is to John Lennon.
