The only thing I would say is that popular music was appreciated more then for the actual musicality rather than the shagability of who was singing or playing.
And in the charts there was something for everyone, and different tastes were catered for and not ridiculed.

Yep I agree with that, it seems image has now overtaken any musical talents.
