Remembering Kerry

I think he has done a pretty good job overall from what I have learned from over here and my hope is now that the Republicans are so petty and ridiculous as to running the Senate and House of Representatives, that the Democrats turn to Hilary Clinton. Who I think would be a formidable and really good President of the USA. |

Pretty much any action he proposes against Isis or Ebola will have to be put through Congress and the Senate. He can't just wave a magic wand and solve the issue and the Republicans will do anything they can to discredit him and the Democrats in order to give them a shot at the next election. Democrats control the White house but the majority of the Senate and (I believe) Congress are currently Republicans. Issues come to a standstill because of this.

Can anybody with a keen eye on American politics explain how the two parties ended up the way they are?
I've been listening to an American Civil War podcast and during that time the Democrats are portrayed as the Southern based slavery advocating party and the Republicans are the more progressive anti-slavery party with huge Union support. I would have thought the opposite given the way the parties seem to behave now.

The democrats, same name they have now, were against it and represent more centre/left whereas republicans would be between right-wing and far-right. |
