Scientifically it has been proved being ostrazised is worse than being bullied, as humans we are naturally more comfortable in groups and when people shun you it hurts, deeply. It takes this type of experience to gain a hard skin and once ostrazised you do care a little less about people's thoughts of your character - and care less which is good.
I honestly think he was being truthful when he said it was painful, and I don't really like him that much... but I would not wish that type of ostracization on anyone. No-one deserves what they are doing to him in that house. I feel sorry for him and it will take many years for him to get over it.
Part of me hopes he stays in and "fights" it but the other part hope he walks for his own mental wellbeing, I think he has mental issues anyway.
