This thread is talking about 2 or 3 years national service, not being drafted to go to an actual war already taking place.

If there was a world war 3, then there would be no choice as to be being called up under some national emergency ruling.

The idea that the army is there just to kill people is a very old fashioned view. They do much more than go to war. The British Army were one of the first organisations to react to the ebola crisis, for instance. Also, you have to be quite bright to get into the army, the days when they'd take anyone are long gone.

The British Army is a highly professional organisation and I'm sure the last thing they want is a load of people who don't want to be there. I do agree with some kind of national service but those conscripted should be able to choose - as the system used to work in Germany (suspended in 2011 I believe). They could choose to work with the elderly, for instance.

I think the army would have the same issues to face that our youth just isn't healthy enough to join anyway voluntary or otherwise. It wouldn't have been spotty recruits that went to aid with the ebola crisis, they have specifically trained medics for that.
I can't imagine why army volunteers would want to work with the elderly... the sally army maybe.
