Default UK To Get Underwater Power Station

[The UK Government has given planning permission for the world's first tidal lagoon to be built off Swansea.

It is claimed the £1bn underwater power station will generate energy for up to 175,000 homes and last for 120 years.]

Very sensible! Finally this government is taking climate change and our carbon footprint seriously.

I've been saying for ages, if people don't want wind farms on our green belt, then why don't we make use of the sea? Great to that our island status is actually being made use of.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still never vote for them because I disagree with the tories on virtually everything, but where credit is due I will give it. This will also help to solve our unemployment for low-skilled workers. Would make a nice walk too!

Would be good to have more of these around the country.

I think it would be much better to have energy nationalised as well though, because once they are built we wouldn't have to pay companies to make profits, and instead reduce energy bills

I think you may have misunderstood. I mean do you think energy as a sector should be renationalised (unprivatised)

I would obviously like to scrap nuclear and coal etc as a green party member (obviously I also recognise we still need nuclear for now, but could be phased out within around 30 years if we wanted to, possibly less) but I also think if we had it owned by the government we could have much better results.

This is slightly old, but probably still valid.

The problem is

i also think energy should be nationalized , I mean privatising water is a joke....welsh water are the only suppliers in most of wales, wheres the free market competiton...and all vat should be scrapped on all energy bills
we also need the severn barrage, which is 25 years over due...we have the second highest most powerful tides in the world , use it for goodness sakes
as for coal, coal production is up 30% in Germany as they use cutting edge technology to find the best seams and liquefy the coal...its far far cleaner quicker infinitely more efficient...coal wont die

It's going to run out. Coal is not renewable. "23 Years Worth of Coal Left. It has been estimated that there are over 847 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves worldwide. This means that there is enough coal to last us around 118 years at current rates of production."

Leave the coal where it is, outsourcing coal was at the time cost effective as the cost of transportation and labour overseas were minimal compared with producing our own.
Green energy should've been utilised years ago but it was held back so some could become super rich. My hope is to one day go off grid, I think everyone should.
This is great if it is geologically viable, and we don't rely on foreign investment to build.

It takes hundreds of thousands if not millions of years to form, it hasn't gotten better in the last 3 decades

You are absolutely insane and delusional. Coal takes millions of years to form, I don't know why you think we've had a buildup over the miniscule duration of just 25 years.

Do you have anything at all to back this up? I can only imagine it's based on the barmy creationist notion that the world is actually only a few thousand years old and coal secretly forms much more quickly.

I mean, I guess it's theoretically slightly better. In the same way that £1 million and a penny is better than £1 million.
