It's a factor if someone starts a thread on it.

Just the same as if someone starts a thread on how many blacks are in, or how many women are in, or anything else.

Someone has just made it a factor.

Try calling it "only a bit of fun" if someone starts a thread on the percentage of races or genders etc.
