Game players let us in on the game playing. Victor was the best at it and used the diary room to let us know. Marc was similar. Letting us in on his motives for his actions. Aaron and Dexter were a milder version.

The difference is James doesn't own it and he's not a 'fun' gameplayer, he's playing it well, but it's boring to watch. All of the above you listed had an element of fun and cheekiness about them. James is just playing the 'good, fair' guy role.

Because he couldn't possibly do it out of having respect for Gail?
And he had to vote to save/evict someone, but yet again he can't do the 'right' thing by people's standards and is made out to look like the villain.
