The main thing that I think Sonic needs to do is maybe do a plot that shows that it's audience has grown up, we're not all kids anymore that play Sonic, Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 came close to what I was saying, but I honestly think that the main issue is the lack of growing up in it's plotlines.
I don't mean going dark either, just more of a grown up vibe that even Mario does in some of it's side installments.

3D Sonic's problem has always been camera angles and uninspiring level design. You only have to look at the reception and sales of Sonic (the original game) up to Sonic & Knuckles compared to now. Fans have been calling for a true 2D Sonic game for years now, it's about time they delievered
