i always wait patiently for all my change, these are not low earners struggling to make a buck. They charge a price that earns them a profit. You wouldn't say ... there is that TV for 299.99 ... lets round it up to 350, so why do it for anything else ... just because they ask you where you have been on holiday this year

Well, giving someone a small tip isn't the same as adding £50 onto the price of a TV, is it?

And ordinarily, the profits all get taken by the business whereas any tips go directly to the staff themselves.
