Well, while it could technically happen at any time, the fact that we're dealing with such huge timescales really means that "about to" or "soon" could mean "in 500 years time". I mean even 1000 years would be pretty "soon" if it hasn't happened for three quarters of a million years...

I sort of agree with this - I think humans will probably have totally wrecked the world within the next 200 years, all on our own, without unavoidable geomagnetic phenomena.
