I live in NJ and this really sucks. The damage is unreal, expected power outages for 5-10 days, trees and branches everywhere. I'm currently living in a hotel and a neighbor's tree fell onto (and into) my house.

Heartfelt sympathies go out to all americans and in particular those directly affected by this nightmare.

Ive heard people mention the possibility of improving sea defences across new york and new jersey and other states...however can much can one defend these coastal cities and states against such a hurricane 1000 miles wide?

The next question that will no doubt arise, is about global warming and climate change. is it just me or are the freak weather getting more freakish month by month, year by year? This wasnt on the scale of the past few tsunamis , but it was still unparalelled storm in its own right. Is it simply the fact we have global tv coverage of these storms that makes them feel more frequent? or in fact are they happening with greater regularity? the FACT the ice caps are melting and the sea levels are rising are surely factors that can no longer be ignored. Its time to act as one world

I wouldnt hold my breath....However the truth is america does send more charity and more aid overseas than any nation (the average per head is also one of the highest in the world in america) the brits arent too tight either I think theyre 5th depending which list you believe

the americans are good people on the whole, I believe their fight for a country by the people and for the people is one of the most noble causes on mother earth...truth is the rest of the planet is mostly engulfed in socialist or communist mumbo jumbo whilst at the same time selling out to massive corporations....america is at leats still fighting for a balance....europeans love bad mouthing all americans, but I hate it...the american friends and people Ive known personally have all been fantastic...warm genuine open honest big hearted, I just love them to bits...to blame individuals (apart from bush lol) for american foreign policy is idiotic....truth is the rest of the world has no idea what its like to be repsonsible for the whole world....its so easy to judge from the sidelines....look at what poor old obama has on his plate for the next 7 days? save obamacare, save the homeless, save america, save libya, save syria, save the middle east, save the euro and next week save himself, ...Its lonely at the top...God speed America!

It should be interesting to see how the majority of New Yorkers survive without their daily fix of fast food. With no McDonalds,Burger King,Wendy's etc... to get their daily5,000 cal fix a lot of them might start suffering from serious malnutrition and a few may even die. Either way its only going to pile even more pressure on the already overstretched emergency services....!!!!
