Mathematically he's the only one who with the SNP can have a chance to govern in Scotland.
With 63 seats. However it's going to be hard to get any major or controversial policies passed. There's no other combinations that could govern in the SNPs place. No way the Cons would support a Labour led governing body. No way LABOUR would support a Con led governing body either. If he's defeated, he could resign and let the SNP try a new leader in place. Or it's starting to look if he's defeated, the mood will be for fresh assembly elections to be held. If the SNP cannot get policies passed. Unless he can win the Greens back or tempt the Lib Dems with anything. Then this looks like more paralysis now for the Scottish assembly. Last edited by joeysteele; 26-04-2024 at 08:57 AM. |

Quote:
the other side of it is that the no confidence vote has no constitutional weight, so the SNP really don't need to care if they lose the vote or not. It won't force any resignations or an election |

Scottish Labour announce plan to force early Holyrood election
Anas Sarwar has announced Labour will try to force a vote of no confidence in the whole Scottish Government as Humza Yousaf fights to save his political life. Mr Yousaf, the First Minister of Scotland, is facing a vote of no confidence on his leadership next week but Mr Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, said this morning he will seek a broader vote in an attempt to force an early Holyrood election. He told LBC: “I think it is now a matter of when, not if Humza Yousaf resigns as First Minister. But I think it would be completely untenable for the SNP to presume they can impose another unelected first minister on Scotland. “That is why Scottish Labour has said already we don’t have confidence in Humza Yousaf. “But today we will also be laying a motion before Parliament saying that the Scottish Parliament does not have confidence in this Scottish Government because ultimately I think it is the people of Scotland that should decide who leads this country not just a small group of SNP members.” |

Any governing body has to be able to get policy through the assembly/ parliament.
Even with the Alba vote that means on paper, 64 votes against 64 votes. Leaving voting in the parliament to a casting vote. If that becomes untenable with any absentees or other issues. There's only one way to resolve it, that's with fresh elections. Yousaf is never likely to get Con or Labour votes It seems the Lib Dems back the no confidence vote too. He has a very hard road ahead to his being in power now for any length of time. Even with the Alba vote. Last edited by joeysteele; 26-04-2024 at 09:39 AM. |
