Wilson intends to kick on

Quote:
James Wilson aims to take his Manchester United career to the next level following his two-goal debut at a packed Old Trafford.

The 18-year-old’s pair of strikes went a long way to helping the Reds to a 3-1 win over Hull City, but it was a far cry from his last outing at the stadium, an Under-21 game against Norwich last month.

Wilson showed no nerves in front of a packed Theatre of Dreams, putting United two ahead with a pair of clinical finishes, each following up on set-up work from Marouane Fellaini.

“It was a great feeling, you can’t compare it to anything else,” Wilson told MUTV. ”The first goal was just sheer euphoria and then the second was just a great experience. The ground is a lot different without 75,000 people, but just to play here even in front of a small crowd for the Under-21s is still a great experience to play on such a ground. With all the fans here tonight it was even better.”

Wilson came close to an appearance a month ago, having been on the bench for the win over Newcastle, but having now made his bow, is convinced he can cope with the demands of top-flight football after representing the Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-21s this term.

“I feel like I can deal with the physicality and pace of the game. I just need to try to get as many games as possible under my belt for the experience. If you’re getting on in the club, you have to be progressing so obviously scoring for every age group is a good sign. I’ve got where I am now but I have to kick on.”

Wise words by a young man, who has plenty of potential to develop and is definitely one for the future. What a dream debut!

Wilson impresses van Persie

Quote:
Robin van Persie has heaped praise on James Wilson after the Manchester United prodigy bagged a clinical brace of goals during his first-team debut against Hull City on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old was handed his first start alongside fellow youngster Tom Lawrence and immediately caught the attention of Old Trafford by opening the scoring on 31 minutes, before doubling his tally in the second half with a real poacher's effort from close range.

Van Persie replaced Wilson just after the hour mark and went on to score the game’s decisive goal, sealing a comfortable 3-1 win for the Reds. While speaking to MUTV after the final whistle, the Dutchman was keen to salute his fellow striker’s remarkable debut.

“James played really well,” enthused van Persie. “I know how hard it is to make your debut - I made mine when I was about 29! I know how special it can be. He made it very special for himself and for everyone tonight. To score two goals is really special.”

Tuesday’s match was also a memorable occasion for Nemanja Vidic, who made his final Old Trafford appearance before leaving the club for Inter Milan. Despite only playing with the Serbian for two seasons, van Persie knows exactly what type of character he is.

“Nemanja has been great,” Robin explained. “He’s been playing here for eight-and-a-half years and the thing I always say about him is that he puts his head where people are scared to put their feet!

“That is Nemanja. He wants to dive for the cause, in a good way. He is very brave, a great player and he’s won everything at Manchester United. It was a special day for him too.”

The Dutchman also reserved a few words of praise for interim manager Ryan Giggs, who has impressed while in charge and came off the bench to make what could be his final playing appearance at the Theatre of Dreams.

“I witnessed two team meetings as I came in a bit late," relayed the fit-again striker. "The one from the last game against Sunderland, and today’s game, were incredible. They were Sir Alex-esque.

“He’s been brilliant and I think he came on without even warming up tonight! Am I correct? He came on without a warm-up, put in some fantastic passes and almost scored. He’s a legend and I think he shows that every day.”

RVP.

Giggs proud of youth

Quote:
Ryan Giggs was proud to watch a host of young Reds make their mark during Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Hull City, continuing Manchester United’s illustrious history of promoting from within.

The interim manager handed debuts to livewire winger Tom Lawrence and 18-year-old striker James Wilson, who scored two impressive goals before leaving the action on the hour mark to a standing ovation from delighted fans inside the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking to MUTV afterwards, Giggs was asked if it is a match he will look back fondly on in years to come. Rather than focusing on his second-half cameo, possibly his last outing as a player at Old Trafford, he was more inclined to praise his talented youngsters.

“Yeah it is,” Ryan answered. “Obviously I managed to get on the pitch but I think the main memory will be the youngsters coming on and doing so well. Manchester United always give young players a chance and it’s up to them to take it. They certainly did that tonight.

“I wasn’t happy with Saturday’s result [against Sunderland] and the performance. I wasn’t angry, I was just gutted after doing so well the week before. I just wanted to freshen things up a bit. The fans recognise young players and will give them a chance if they make a mistake and they took their chance.

"Michael Keane, Tom and James have been at the club since they were nine and Adnan Januzaj since he was 16. It was brilliant to see and they deserve all the plaudits.

"James didn’t surprise me," he insisted. "I wanted to play Marouane Fellaini up with him to add a bit of presence and take the pressure off him a little bit. It worked well, they linked up for the first goal and it was great to see James score the two goals."

Tuesday’s comfortable win over Hull also saw club captain Nemanja Vidic make his final appearance at Old Trafford before joining Inter Milan in the summer, replacing the injured Phil Jones in the first half to produce a typically steadfast performance in defence.

"He played in the last two games so I was only intending to bring him on in the last 10 or 15 minutes," admitted Giggs. "He came on earlier than we expected because of Jonah’s injury but he didn’t put a foot wrong like he’s done over the last eight years. He’s been a brilliant player for us and a brilliant defender."

Amazing words by Giggsy. United always bring through the young players and give them a chance!

Van Persie: We'll be back, trust me

Quote:
Robin van Persie is still "gutted" about his injury-hit season, although the Dutchman insists he and United will be firing on all cylinders again next term.

The 30-year-old has missed large chunks of a disappointing campaign with a variety of knocks and only registered his 23rd appearance of 2013/14 during Tuesday's 3-1 win over Hull City, stepping off the bench to replace debutant James Wilson and score the game's final goal.

Now fully fit, van Persie is determined to help United bounce back, and speaking to MUTV after the final whistle he was confident about doing just that.

"It was important to end on a high," Robin explained. "Obviously we wanted to do a lot better during the campaign, but it wasn't meant to be. This was good though."

When pressed for an assessment of his own season, van Persie continued: "A bit up and down, I wasn't fully fit and that's where everything starts for me. You need to get a full season in. You can miss a couple of games but not as many as I missed."

"I think I missed half the season. I am gutted about that. For next year I just want to stay fit, do well and compete again. I'm sure we will compete again next year. We'll be back, trust me, we will be back. Trust me. Save this interview!"

Carrick: We'll miss Vidic

Quote:
Michael Carrick paid a warm tribute to Nemanja Vidic after the Manchester United stalwart bade farewell to Old Trafford in the Reds' 3-1 win over Hull City.

The Serbian centre-back leaves United at the end of the season, bringing an outstanding eight-and-a-half year stay to an end, and he made one last appearance at Old Trafford against the Tigers after replacing the injured Phil Jones on 22 minutes, following it with a heartfelt speech on the pitch after the final whistle.

Vidic helped United to five Premier League titles, three league cups and the Champions League and, in Carrick's opinion, deserves to be remembered as one of the club's greats.

"You want to win the game but, at the same time, you've got to celebrate Vida," Carrick told MUTV. "We have to celebrate the service he's given the club for so long, having achieved so much.

"He's a leader and one of the best defenders the club has had. It's sad that he's leaving because he'll be missed as he's a top player and an important part of the squad. Sometimes you've got to move on and we respect that.

"I'm sure he must have been touched by the reception he got from the crowd. He's a man of few words so I was a bit surprised to see him get on the microphone at the end. You could see he was touched and there was definitely some emotion there. He's got one game left but that was his last one at this special place. He'll be missed."

James Wilson's two-goal debut and the contribution of another debutant in Tom Lawrence also drew praise from the experienced Reds midfielder.

"James made a terrific debut. I thought Tom did really well on the left too, neither of them were fazed by it. They came in and did themselves no harm, it was great to see that they both settled in well. I tried to make it as comfortable as possible for them, telling them to play their normal game and they did that.

"The manager said before the game that as they were playing well they'll get their chance. They certainly took it and that's all you can ask."
Nice words by Carrick. Vidic is so going to be missed!

Mata wins second award

Quote:
Juan Mata has been named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for the second time in his burgeoning but so far brief career with the Reds.

The Spanish playmaker topped the poll for April on the club's official websites and subsequently tweeted a message to the fans who voted for him: "Thanks again! Gracias de nuevo."

Mata was cup tied for the Champions League double-header against Bayern Munich, but he turned in some excellent displays in the Barclays Premier League to win the accolade ahead of fellow nominees Shinji Kagawa and Phil Jones. The 26-year-old scored a superb brace in the Reds’ impressive 4-0 away win over Newcastle United, and needed just 30 minutes as a substitute to repeat the feat against Norwich City in Ryan Giggs’ first game as interim manager.

Voting for United's Player of the Year - at www.manutd.com/awards - will close at 21:00 BST on Thursday, with the result due to be announced later in the same evening during the club's awards dinner at Old Trafford.

Well done Juan Mata. I voted for DDG to win United's POTY!

The rightful winner seeing as though pretty much everyone else has been shit.

Giggs announces retirement

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Fe...m-playing.aspx

Gutted, but what a career Ryan Giggs has had. He is such a legend, winner and is unreal.

At the same time I am happy he will be LVG's Assistant Manager, so we will still see his presence.

First post on the Man U forum (Go easy on me ! ).
Been a fan since 1985.
Giggs is such a class act. We really needed him to stay on the coaching staff.
LVG can do what Moyes found difficult, being tough on the players.
I hope he can bring in world class players even without Champions League football next season.
The only thing that gave me comfort after such an awful season was Liverpool NOT winning the league. Let's hope they slip back out the top 4 next year & those who have heaped so much praise on Rogers & Liverpool eat their words.
I really think the LVG will take us back to the top again.

What a good start to the Summer by United signing Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, we are finally addressing our weaknesses and by the sounds of things a few more signings to come.

I am glad Antonio Valencia signed a new contract too.

I am really excited for LVG to take over after the World Cup and seeing how we do under him and what he has planned.
