Iran, Israel and Pakistan – most unpopular countries in the world

Every year, since 2005, the BBC World Service commissions an international poll that ranks the popularity of various countries. It surveys more than 13,000 people across 21 countries. The three most unpopular countries in this survey this year (as they were in last year’s) are Iran, Israel and Pakistan. Iran is universally viewed, it appears, as a demon. Iran seems to have few friends in the world. Israel was negatived viewed by 19 out of the 21 countries polled. It scored a positive result in the US and a divided score in Russia only . The results were recorded prior to the Gaza incursion, the situation would only be worse given the increase in anti-Semite violence around the globe after that conflict. Pakistan also scored very negatively, as it is also on every one’s radar, particularly post the attacks in Mumbai in November 2008.

What is interesting is that these three are all, to one degree or another, democracies. So the democratic process, as a measure of popularity, is subservient, it appears, to the domestic and foreign policy of the countries involved. Two are Muslim, two are in the Middle East, all are immersed, to some extent, in militaristic campaigns, and the three as a result are almost universally disliked. Others not performing well in the survey include China, Russia and North Korea. Some of these are naturally viewed with suspicion by others around the world. All are militarily strong. Is it the threat factor that motivates those polled to rank these countries so poorly?

In terms of the movers and shakers on the list, the US still has a negative standing, but has improved moderately since Obama’s victory. However, at a macro level almost twice as many countries still disapprove of the US than approve, though its standing among European countries remain mainly unchanged. Russia has slid markedly in terms of world approval seemingly in correlation to its more aggressive foreign policies in the last 12 months. The Europeans in fact lead the pack in terms of their approval rating with Germany heading the list, and the UK marked as improved with a 7 point lift in its rating.

So what conclusions can one draw from the poll findings? The survey tends to reflect global suspicions of the agendas of the unpopular sovereign states. The findings are relatively consistent across surveyed countries – a demonized country is viewed as such relatively consistently across the world. The results should be reviewed soberly by the countries called for improvement. The people appeared to care less about the type of government but more about its policy set. Of the bottom 6 countries, 4 are nominally democratic forms of governance. It also appears that international implications rather than regional concerns were the prinmary drivers of the results, although the growing disapproval raking for Russia is to a degree a reaction to European regional tensions. It appears, when it comes to foreign policy, the world does watch and listen, so maybe there is a hope for us all yet.

In Depth: Most Admired Countries
Chicago was dropped from hosting the Olympics in the first round of decisions last week. And stateside, Barack Obama's average approval rating last month was 52%, according to Gallup. That's compared to spring numbers in the mid-60s.

But two recent reports show that globally, positive opinion of the U.S. has blossomed. Approval of America among the French rose to 75% this year, from 42% in 2008. In Britain, those numbers are 69% and 53%, respectively, according to this year's Pew Global Attitudes Project. The 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index, released Monday, also supports this notion.

For the first time since 2005 when Simon Anholt--an independent policy adviser to 20 national, regional and city governments--started conducting the survey, the U.S. has been named the most admired country in the world, climbing six spots in the rankings from 2008. Rounding out the top five are other beloved countries like France, Germany, the U.K. and Japan.

Anholt attributed the U.S.' rank to global confidence in Obama. He also believes that former president George W. Bush's incredibly unpopular foreign policy pulled the country down in terms of image. After he left office this year, the only way for the U.S. to go was up. "The country's position was artificially depressed by Bush," says Anholt.

An increase in U.S. popularity meant a decrease for its neighbor Canada. The country dropped three spots.


"I prophesied that if the image of the U.S. ever improved, the perception of Canada would suffer," says Anholt. While Canada scores high for its friendly people and beautiful landscape, outsiders know little else about the country's culture. All they do believe, Anholt deduces, is that Canada is the opposite of the United States in policy. "If the U.S. is illiberal, intolerant and aggressive, then Canada is liberal, tolerant and passive," he says. "Now the seesaw has gone the other way, and Canada is losing its identity."

Behind The Numbers
To complete this survey, Anholt, in partnership with Princeton, N.J.-based market research firm GfK Roper, surveyed 20,000 people from 20 countries--chosen for geographic and economic diversity--over the summer of 2009. The survey asked respondents to rank 50 countries in six categories: governance, culture, products and services, people, tourism and immigration/investment.


The "governance" section of the survey included questions on human rights and foreign policy, while "culture" encompassed heritage, popular culture and sports. The "products and services" section asked about brands each country is known for (e.g., IKEA is associated with Sweden). The "people" category included queries on the perceived attitudes of each country's citizens (that is, whether or not they seem hard-working, warm, friendly or tolerant). Questions in "tourism" focused on whether or not the respondents would want to visit these countries on vacation. And "immigration/investment" asked about living in these countries and investing in their businesses.

Most countries in the top 10 scored fairly well in every area, but with exceptional strength in one category. For example, Australia, with its enviable beaches, mountains and distinctive cityscapes, is "a tourist destination to die for," says Anholt. And while the French aren't, for the most part, thought of as particularly friendly or warm, Anholt says that in terms of culture and tourism, the country scores high. Germany is widely admired for its brands such as Adidas ( ADDDY.PK - news - people ), Volkswagen ( VLKAF.PK - news - people ) and Hugo Boss.

All in all, these are places many of us would like to visit, and possibly live. The question is, will the U.S. remain in the top spot next year?

"It'll keep its place for as long as Obama is in office," says Jose Filipe Torres, chief executive of Bloom Consulting, a Madrid-based brand strategy firm with clients including Spain, which tied with Sweden for 10th place. However, he doesn't think that U.S.' newfound branding power indicates anything about its economic future. "Good brand positing doesn't always mean more tourism, economic development and foreign investment."

I find the whole thing very fascinating. It also makes me think of people's attitudes towards UFO's and aliens. The people who say "if there were aliens, they would show themselves, and land on the White House lawn".

Well maybe they wouldn't. We are specifically not contacting this tribe because people think it would be immoral, but what must those tribal people think when they see a helicopter flying over filming them? Maybe the aliens have the same attitude.

I think it's immoral to not contact this tribe. Imagine how many people must die of diseases we have cures for. Imagine the infant mortality rate and the short lifespan these people have.

In the same way, if aliens have a cure for cancer, we'd want them to land and share it with us, i think we have a moral responsibility to contact this tribe, and share our medical technology with them.

No. We should leave them alone........You mention about diseases and cures........That's the very reason we should stay away.......They will not have the same rugged immune system to modern infections that we have......Even with treatment if they are exposed to our diseases it will most likely kill them in great numbers........
