Plenty of people have kids for the wrong reasons (to save a relationship, to keep someone from leaving them, they're bored, they feel pressured into doing it to keep the other person happy, they want to have kids before a certain age, they want to sacrifice them to an Aztec god when the sun is the highest in the sky) and plenty of people step up to the plate when they have them. The idea you put across in the OP is as bad as people expecting having a boyfriend/girlfriend will make them complete as a person, make them happy when they aren't happy already... it's dumb. But plenty of people become well rounded and better off for having had a baby because they stop being selfish and start putting someone else's needs before their own. Not everyone who has a kid does that, but plenty of people do.
