You do have to be clear and consistent. Jason has not done that. One minute he tells her it's over, the next he's sitting with her talking about how nice it is to see how she's behaving in the house, saying 'we'll see' about the outside, which is saying that he sees them talking on the outside.

Charlie doesn't WANT to take the hint. But that's all it was for weeks - a hint that he didn't want to be with her, because his words did not communicate that. 10 minutes later Jason would say something else.

Trying to be nice as everyone sees it, prolongs the situation. But he certainly didn't have to be cruel. Just clear AND consistent.

Unless the sad bitch is TOTALLY bereft of intelligence, then I think that poor Jason has communicated to her in as many ways possible - language and body language - that HE DOES NOT WANT TO BE WITH HER.

As someone who has been in an abusive relationship, let me tell you that it's very doubtful that any abused woman can love her abuser. They can be afraid to leave them, make excuses because the woman herself has low self esteem or stay for a while because they have a foolish hope that things can improve, but love is usually beaten out of them very quickly.
