I think, Connie, you should quote a few references for your statements.
Illiteracy has always been with us. In the past there were many unskilled manual jobs which allowed people to go through life without needing to read. Many people had no driving licence, no bank account etc etc, there was much less pressure to be able to read.

If Lisa and other layabouts like her put as much effort into educating themselves, as they put into dodging work ("it's really difficult to get a job because I don't drive"), they might be able to disguise how stupid they are.

Statistical data shows your claims to be wrong. There are many illiterate 60+year olds. You are right that most people don't 'run into them'. This does NOT mean they do not exist.

Firstly, I'm talking about people who were educated in this country, not older people coming from elsewhere, where the education system might not be so good......just to clear that one up.

Hira is the one person in the house who has fewer brain cells than the two lumps of wood, Lisa and David.

I would hand them both a brush, and tell them to get into the street and do the only job that their level of intelligence will allow them to do properly.

Then tell them that their dole money would be paid after their supervisor Trigger was satisfied with the level of their work.
