I think it's more to do with how he did it. He could have quietly gone up to Rachael and asked to speak to her in the lounge and then, because he knew she fancied him, he should have been more subtle and sensitive. Could have been a brief "Could you try to stop pulling faces because it makes me feel stupid", let her briefly explain, then leave it as that

He clearly doesn't know how popular BB is, because it's likely she would have gotten a magazine deal. He timed it badly - at the dinner table, he belittled her by not even making eye-contact - he just looked at his plate while he was aggressively talking to her.
