It's pretty obvious why 'he' wanted everyone to see it. It gives the impression that he's a decent person who's admitted to making a mistake. Still doesn't change the fact he did it on more than one occasion. That's not a mistake. People learn from mistakes.

I'd imagine whoever gave this to the media has been blocked from doing so for a long time by his people but maybe they've decided that enough is enough and he needs taken down a few pegs and so now it's gone public - no way this stuff has remained hidden for years and randomly gets released this week, it stinks of intentional PR sabotage.
