I don't know anyone who says it as it is a bit cringe, there was a thing about saying 'gaaaaaaay' in a funny way, if someone was acting a bit daft but you don't hear that hardly ever either now as it would be mightily embarrassing if they were actually gay or it upset someone around who was gay.

I know its offensive when i think about it, but I still use it anyway. my fave insults to call people are 'big gays' or 'big sluts'
do i hate gay people? no. (hello, im a ninadyke). do i hate sluts? sometimes. but do i mean to offend these people? of course not. so at the end of the day, i dont care.

I hate when gays get pissy as if the only meaning of the word is to do with homosexuals. See below, 4th meaning
gay Line breaks: gay Pronunciation: /ɡeɪ / Definition of gay in English: ADJECTIVE (gayer, gayest) 1(Of a person, especially a man) homosexual. 1.1Relating to or used by homosexuals: a gay bar 2 dated Light-hearted and carefree: Nan had a gay disposition and a very pretty face 3 dated Brightly coloured; showy: a gay profusion of purple and pink sweet peas 4 informal offensive Foolish, stupid, or unimpressive: he thinks the obsession with celebrity is totally gay http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/de...on/english/gay

got dat coffee sh*tz
|
I grew up saying it very young before I even knew what being gay was. I was always so used to saying it and I can't even think now if I say it these days?? I did wonder if a man who worked in Starbucks was gay once openly on instagram as he was always so rude to me unless i had my boyfriend with me that to me he was so obviously flirting with and he somehow seen me asking if he was gay and got all his friends to call me a homophobe and a "P*ki" (hmm, whatever that means) in my comments LOL I would ask why they thought I was homophobic and they would just keep telling me it was because I was wondering if he was gay :/ So I guess some people are annoyed by the word "Gay" just being in a sentence.

Here is a pretty good article on it http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...ing-gap-people
Also here is the etymology of the word http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=gay, so around the 2000s, when people who weren't gay tried to change the word to mean something lame or crap, the word only meant homosexual, the previous meanings had gone out of fashion. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

yeah I have to say the "oh it didn't used to mean homosexual!" line is a pretty poor defence when using gay to mean lame (also an offensive word) or rubbish, has only really surfaced since the 90s.
it's one of those things where I'm comfortable using it as a joke with close friends I know are on my wavelength but at the same time whenever I see it used on twitter / hear someone at work or out at a bar or whatever use it, I instantly hate them for it.

The phrase stems from homophobia. It didn't magically appear one day out of nowhere. Using a term that labels a minority group derogatorily is never okay.
