How about this for a conspiracy theory. Clubs pay what Liverpool want, or they don't sign him.

I wouldn't be surprised if the club have said to him to take a couple of weeks and either arrange for a club to pay the figure requested, or he comes back with his head down and they revisit it in either January or next summer. He's not stupid, he won't want to be sitting out even more of a WC season than he's already forced to.
