For those that were 'stuck' - it's just the placebo effect. I guess it's psychology - some peoples' minds wanted to feel something happen and therefore it did?

The few people I know who did get stuck were the ones who didn't think it would work! Seems everyone who wanted to get stuck didn't. Hmph

I did try it the second time and this time I just sat there and thought this isn't going to work and I want to prove that.

And you know what?

It didn't LOL

I'll try again.

Self fulfilling prophecy

I knew my A in A Level psychology would come in useful at some point

I don't think this whole series is what we're being lead to believe. I think there is something else in it. But I was looking forward to becoming a psychic spy, it might not happen now

Its NOT magic, he's never claimed it to be magic - anyone saying "he's an idiot magic doesn't exist" should really read up on some things. It's also not self fulfilling prophecy Tom, but good explanation haha. (It sort of is, but if you read below you'll see the difference)

The explanation was that he introduced the "hype", people WANTED it to work, they expected themselves to be stuck, and they feared being stuck at the same time. The fear of being stuck tricked the brain (in some instances) that you were stuck.

There were no subliminal messages either lol.
(Also I didn't get 'stuck' haha).

I KNEW you'd do that to me you can shove yer degree. Its what it means to me, I only know it in simplistic terms remember

And there were subliminal messages, there was a flash that came up a few times. Could never make out what it was although I've heard people say it was someone tied to a chair

Why are people trying it again and again? It's based on quick fire suggestion and surprise, throughout the entire show. In fact, the video itself was probably nothing more than a placebo. If it did not work the first time I would be very surprised to see it work a second time.

Anyway, very interesting explanaiton on the lottery trick here : http://ninethirtyfive.wordpress.com/...-he-rigged-it/

I am hoping all of this stuff ties together in the final show. A lot of this is hit and miss so far. Even Derren knows that. Not everybody was going to get stuck. It was a huge risk.

I think it was little hypnotism and power of suggestion as well. Like you said, it was how the TV can influence you to do something.

But I think there were some subliminal messages. I saw one flicker onto the screen of a man trapped in a chair with some rope around his torso.

It'll easily work on those easily suggestible.

Yeah I saw someone tied to a chair.

I did feel something but I think it was how suggestible you were. I think some tried to get up and got up while others tried and got stuck there.

I'm unsure why people are using the word placebo here because they're two different things. A placebo is something given to you is told to have an effect but doesn't - while you believe it does.

He was trying to say it wasn't the video that stuck people to their chairs- it was people wanting to be stuck that caused it.

I didn't mean wanting like that as such, but if you say to yourself "I'm going to get stuck" and believe it enough, it can happen

Which is why I think it was more the power of suggestion by subliminal imagery. It's the same thing with advertisements. They're not exactly subliminal (because I think it's banned in advertisements) but they show imagery and give sounds that make the product appealing beyond it's sum parts.

That's why in this thread people are saying they wanted to and tried to get stuck because wanting to and trying to should encourage alongside the influencing with the suggestibility.

Suggestibility itself though is hardwired in our personality and our identity so it's not easy to just say you want to be suggestible at whim.

Not wanting to get stuck, or the fear of getting stuck, can be just as powerful a form of suggestion. Some people could not move because despite the fact that they could, they're brains roped them into thinking they cant through fear, to the point where you cannot connect your will to the actual physical act of moving, and thus you are 'stuck'.

Also, I think those subliminal images were just tongue in cheek. They looked riddculous and were flashed far, far too obvious and slow. Plus Derren mentioned they have no effect. But then, in a way they did due to him saying that, and us wondering why, and so on and so forth, until we dont know what to think and...

...voila. Derren is a very rich and famous man.

The "images" that flashed up were too obvious to be subliminal. They were used to heighten fear and expectation in us, he manufactured them to be fast, but fast enough for us to see them! So we thought... wow he's really using subliminal messages!

Also, notice how he said if you let it, it should work on ''bright, creative individuals''.

Translation : Let this work on you and you are great.

Just to add, the series is about misdirection and the title of Friday's show was "How To Control The Nation"

Whether or not people got stuck to their seats, he still controlled the 4m people who watched
