Here is a pretty good article on it http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...ing-gap-people
Also here is the etymology of the word http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=gay, so around the 2000s, when people who weren't gay tried to change the word to mean something lame or crap, the word only meant homosexual, the previous meanings had gone out of fashion. yeah I have to say the "oh it didn't used to mean homosexual!" line is a pretty poor defence when using gay to mean lame (also an offensive word) or rubbish, has only really surfaced since the 90s.
it's one of those things where I'm comfortable using it as a joke with close friends I know are on my wavelength but at the same time whenever I see it used on twitter / hear someone at work or out at a bar or whatever use it, I instantly hate them for it. |

The phrase stems from homophobia. It didn't magically appear one day out of nowhere. Using a term that labels a minority group derogatorily is never okay.

I don't get this new method of praising something, called SICK.
