As someone who doesn't live in a fairytale I do believe that human-catalysed climate change is a real thing and I could almost sympathise with some of these people if I thought it was all about a genuine drive and passion to support a cause ... but I just don't buy it. I think most of these people are bored, self-important, attention seeking and want to feel like a "bigger part of the story" because they feel small in their lives.

I just don't see real ideology in any of it. I see naval-gazing.

Indeed but it all sort of fell apart rather quickly, with the most "virtuous" actually turning out to be openly (even proudly) tribal in a quite aggressive or even vicious way, minimizing or justifying it through a veneer of righteousness. Daft, meaningless stock phrases like "the right side of history", etc.
