Fergie :

Quote:
SAF on last season: “This club never gives in! From Sir Matt Busby, the Munich Disaster, to rebuilding and to win the European Cup.

Ryan Giggs, deary me, he is a freak, a unique freak. A phenomenal man. We are lucky to have him.

De Gea has been magnificent. You saw Phil Jones tonight, he could be our best player ever.

on RvP: "He had a dry spell, as most strikers do, but he has come back from that & he was unbelievable tonight."

You have to forget [last season]. You can go on and on about it, but our consistency over the last 20 season has been unbelievable"

RvP

"It's weird, I had to wait for so long for my first title. It's a great feeling. It is a fantastic team & fantastic set of players. This championship is for every single one of them. The staff, managers & physios. Let me enjoy this moment, next game is against Arsenal, but let me enjoy this moment."

Giggs :

"To win it back is something special. We put on a show & did it in style. The youngsters have learned from last year. Everything comes from the manager. He's an unbelievable manager & an unbelievable person & he deserves everything he gets."

United crowned champions

Quote:
Manchester United were crowned champions of England for a record-extending 20th time on Monday night following a 3-0 victory at home to Aston Villa.

The title triumph, made possible when Manchester City slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, came with four matches still remaining of the 2012/13 season. Now the challenge for Sir Alex’s men is to eclipse Chelsea’s Premier League record points haul of 95 from 38 games, a scenario that requires the Reds to win all four remaining fixtures.

Whether or not that happens, United will always be able to reflect on a job well done this term. The heartache of letting an eight-point lead slip in the final six matches of 2011/12 would have broken lesser sides. The Reds, however, used that disappointment as fuel on the relentless hunt for the trophy this time around.

Recent performances may have lacked the style and panache usually associated with title-winning teams, but that shouldn’t mask what’s been a record-breaking season.

En route to winning the league, the Reds became the only side in English top-flight history to post 26 wins from the first 30 games. Sir Alex’s side has also featured more different league scorers (19) than any other United side in history. And to think some tried to label the Reds a one-man team...

Of course, right now there’s only one number that really matters and that’s no.20. Manchester United are champions again!

Woo Hoo. The celebrations are rightly continuing today!

Vote: Man of the match

Quote:
Manchester United wrapped up the Barclays Premier League title with a splendid 3-0 triumph against Aston Villa as all the goals were scored by Robin van Persie in the first half.

The Reds' leading goalscorer is the obvious choice for our Man of the Match award after slamming in a superb treble, including an incredible volleyed second from Wayne Rooney's visionary pass.

The right flank is well represented by Antonio Valencia and Rafael. The pair combined regularly to cause problems for the Villa defence with the Ecuadorian showing the sort of sparkle and confidence that took him all the way to the Player of the Year award last term.

Rafael was his usual ebullient self and desperately unlucky not to score when his right-footed drive cannoned back off a post with Brad Guzan beaten.

Our final candidate is Ryan Giggs, who rolled back the years once again with yet another vintage performance. The Welsh veteran outpaced his marker in one swashbuckling run down the flank and teed up van Persie for two of his hat-trick strikes.

Boss: Focus won us the title

Quote:
Sir Alex Ferguson attributes United's 20th league title to the steely focus within his squad.

Having missed out on the title in such dramatic circumstances last term, the Reds bounced back in record-breaking fashion and mercilessly marched to glory this time around – demonstrating the character of champions for all to see.

"The players' focus was fantastic this season," Sir Alex said. "They didn't get themselves annoyed by what happened last season. A lot of teams – most teams in the country – would have melted. But not this bunch.

"They went on and did what Manchester United expects of them and raised the bar. You could go on and on and on about losing a title, and we've had to do that in my time. I think our consistency for the last 20 years has been unbelievable. It's been a marvellous performance. We've got 84 points with four games left – fantastic.

"The one thing I said to them at the start of the season was: 'Make sure you do not lose on goal difference again'. Last season was the first time we've ever lost on goal difference. We've always had a superior goal difference to all our opponents. That was the point where I realised that was the challenge: our goal difference must be better than theirs across the road."

Detractors continue to insist that the manager’s latest batch of champions does not stand comparison with its illustrious forebears, but Sir Alex gives short shrift to such a notion and insists that his squad has a bright future ahead of them.

“I think it's dead easy to say that,” he shrugged. “Nostalgia plays tricks on people's minds, without doubt. You do it yourself. How many times have you said: 'Ah, when I was a boy, things weren't the same’?

“Put it in context: we've now got 84 points with four games left and we've never done that. We've won most of our games, drawn three, lost four and the goal [van Persie’s second] tonight… it doesn't matter where you place that in terms of all the great goals we've scored, from David Beckham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Eric Cantona...

“That pedestal is there, the players have joined that pedestal. We've got some young, exciting players – you've seen how De Gea's improved over the season into an outstanding goalkeeper, young Rafa, you saw Jones tonight... arguably, the way he's looking, he could be our best ever player.”

The headlines, however, belonged to a more established United star. Having scored the goals that propelled the Reds' early charge for the title, as well as the brilliant hat-trick which sealed it, Robin van Persie inevitably drew plaudits from his manager.

"Robin's been unbelievable," said Sir Alex. "He had that dry spell where he hadn't scored for a few weeks but the penalty kick at Stoke brought it back. He was unbelievable tonight, unbelievable. Fantastic.

"He has to take a lot of the credit – his goals tell you that and his performance levels tell you that. I'm sure Robin would be saying what a great bunch of players I've got with me – they're a great bunch of players."

I agree with SAF (what a legend he is), the players were great and so was our consistency so IMO we deserve this Premier League trophy win.

Van Persie greedy for more

Quote:
Robin van Persie is greedy for more medals after winning the Barclays Premier League for the first time in his career.

The Dutchman savoured the atmosphere at an electric Old Trafford after firing all three goals in the title-clinching success against Aston Villa on Monday, and he hopes this is just the beginning of a trophy-laden spell.

"It's a great feeling," he told MUTV. "I had to wait a long time and I've been thinking and speaking about it with Rio, for example, in the car and he's been telling me: 'Listen, whatever happens, that's the standard.' He's right. From now on, our new standard is we want to be champions every year and we want to win more.

"We are even more hungry than we were last season because you could just tell, from day one, everyone wanted this. I want to win it again. I want to win more stuff. I want to win the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Capital One Cup. I want to win it all.

"This is a trophy for all of us - the management, staff, all the players, and the fans have been brilliant too. They've been absolutely amazing, cheering us on every single game, home and away, so credit to them as well."

In a separate interview with Sky Sports, van Persie paid tribute to all of his colleagues. "I'm very happy," he stated. "I had to wait so long for my first title and it's a great feeling. We have a fantastic team, fantastic players. It's a championship for every single one of them, and I mean everyone: the staff, the manager, trainers, players, medical staff... everyone has been great. This is our 20th title and, I think, deserved."

Class words by RVP, no wonder he is delighted after how long it has taken him to win a trophy.

I am buzzing for our younger players too, some who have won the PL for the first time.

Rio Ferdinand rubs salt into Manchester City wounds: 'United won title in the right way, not on goal difference'

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United's title cruise compares favourably with the last-ditch manner of Manchester City's triumph last season.

United wrapped up their 20th championship with four games to spare thanks to last night's 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

It ended City's brief reign as England's top dogs, and helped United erase the memory of what happened 12 months previously, when Sergio Aguero's injury-time effort won the Premier League for City seconds after United had concluded their own campaign.

There has been nothing like the thrills this time around, with United establishing a comfortable advantage on the back of a series of key victories away from Old Trafford.

And Ferdinand is relishing the ease with which dominance has been re-established.

"It's always sweet when you win the title and it's nice to do it here, in the right way and in style, not on goal difference," said Ferdinand.

We have won it outright and we have won it comfortably."

There were some who felt United might struggle to recover from the trauma they suffered last season, especially given the finance available to City manager Roberto Mancini.

But those doubters reckoned without the extreme determination within the Old Trafford camp, and the focus derived from Sir Alex Ferguson, who has now won an incredible 13 championships, the same number as Arsenal have managed in their entire history.

"It just shows the resilience and attitude the manager has instilled in us," said Ferdinand. "A lot of teams would probably have fallen away.

"We played Liverpool a couple of seasons ago when they were fighting for the title, we beat them and got to the league before them and they've not been seen since.

"That shows the mentality and character that this club has."

It is too simplistic to say Robin van Persie has made the difference.

There is no doubting the impact last night's hat-trick hero has had at Old Trafford though.

And with Luis Suarez out of contention, it now seems certain the Dutchman will become the first player to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards since Thierry Henry.

"Robin has been a big factor," said Ferdinand.

"Last season, we lost on goal difference which tells you that we didn't score enough goals.

"We brought in a man who was top scorer last season and he looks like he is going to do that again this season.

"He has definitely added to what we had already."

Premier League: Manchester United ace Antonio Valencia wants to stay

Quote:

Antonio Valencia has revealed that he hopes to end his career at Manchester United.

The 27-year-old winger - who has two years left on his current deal - also played down rumours, which he believes emanated in his homeland, that he was looking to leave the club this summer.

"Neither the club or the coach have said anything about that (leaving Manchester United), I think it was a rumour that came about in Ecuador more than anywhere else," the Ecuadorian ace told Radio La Deportiva.

"This [Manchester] is my home, I would like to stay here for a lot longer and retire here before going back to Ecuador."

Valencia admits that it has taken him time to physically get over the broken leg he suffered in September 2010 against Rangers in the Champions League.

"When I had the problem with my leg I recovered mentally without any difficulty," he said.

"But the problem with my back was something that affected me for a lot longer, but now I am fine and physically much better."

Valencia was talking after helping United to clinch the Premier League title on Monday against Aston Villa.

"I am very happy, this is my second championship here," he said.

"I have the confidence that the coach has given me and when you go into a match with the confidence of the team, it gives you extra motivation."

Valencia is now focused on helping Ecuador seal their place at the 2014 World Cup finals.

"It has been an effort from everyone in the national side, it's like a family that we have formed," he said.

"We cannot let it slip now, we missed out on the last World Cup, we can't miss this one. We have two difficult games coming up, but they are six points and two games that could give us qualification."
